Michael Smith: Family remembers 'gentle giant' killed in Wigan crash: Michael Smith

Michael Smith, 53, died when the car Hanzah Yusuf, 21, was driving on Poolstock left the road and crashed into him on the pavement in February 2019.

The family of a man who died after being knocked off his mobility scooter in Wigan have paid tribute to their 'gentle giant'.

Michael Smith, 53, died when the car Hanzah Yusuf, 21, was driving on Poolstock left the road and crashed into him on the pavement in February 2019.

Yusuf (29/01/2000), of Park Lane, Abram, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to four years in prison at Manchester Crown Court on 11 November 2021.

He must serve two years behind bars and will be banned from driving ban for three years after he is released.

His brother, Noor Mohammed Yusuf (23/01/1990), also of Park Lane, Abram, was found not guilty after a trial of the same offence.

He was, however, found guilty of dangerous driving and given an 18-month community order.

Michael's family said: "Today has been a long time coming.

"We miss our gentle giant Michael so much - his laughter, sense of humour and most of all his chats on the phone.

"It was so lovely to hear some of the fond memories from his friends and we will treasure forever.

"We would like to thank whoever tried to save Michael and everyone that has been involved with the investigation.

"Justice is finally served and we can all try and start to move on. Hopefully our Mum is looking down on today too."
